Why Does My Car Shake When Braking?

2021 Kia Sorento on Highway
If you are driving around Columbus and find that your car trembles when braking, it can be a little disconcerting. Thankfully this is a fairly common issue, and usually quite easy to diagnose and fix. Here at Celebration Kia, we’ll walk you through the different possible symptoms, and then explain what might be wrong in each case. Once you no longer need to ask “Why does my car shake when braking?”, contact our service center and we’ll be happy to help you with the issue.

Diagnosing The Problem

There could be a number of reasons that your car trembles when braking. One of the easiest ways to begin to diagnose the problem is by noting where and when the car is shaking. The most common reason for a car shaking is your tires being out of alignment, but if your car shakes specifically when you press the brake, then it could be a problem with your braking system. Either your brake pedal, your steering wheel, or both could be shaking, and each combination indicates a problem with a different part:

  • The Brake Rotor (Shaking in the steering wheel and brake pedal)
  • The Brake Pad (Shaking only in the brake pedal)
  • The Brake Caliper (Shaking only in the steering wheel)

Tires Need Service

If your car is trembling even when you aren’t braking, your tires could be the source of the problem. If your tires are out of alignment or just a bit old, your suspension has to work extra hard to keep everything balanced. Hitting a pothole or curb in Delaware can alter your alignment and cause the wobble. This will make it feel like you’re fighting with your steering wheel as you drive.

This can also be caused by a damaged axle, but both issues are usually checked during a routine tire rotation. Bring your car in to have a professional mechanic check your tires.

Brake Rotors Are Warped

The most common answer to, “Why does my car shake when braking?” is warped or damaged brake rotors. If both your brake pad and steering wheel are vibrating as you brake, your brake rotors could be out of balance, warped, or damaged. This usually happens from age. Schedule service with us and a technician can check your system and replace the rotors.

Brake Pads Are Worn Down

Another possible reason your car trembles when braking on Dublin streets is because of worn down brake pads. Brake pads come with a small strip of metal that makes a squealing sound when they need to be replaced. This tab of metal can cause vibrations that are felt exclusively in the brake pedal.

Brake Calipers are Sticking

One last possible answer to “Why does my car shake when braking?” is an issue with your brake calipers. The brake system of a car is complex, and the calipers are what press your brake pads against the brake rotors to bring the car to a stop. If they have an issue, the pads may not be fully pressed against the rotor and it could cause shaking in your steering wheel.
