What is Good Mileage On a Used Car?

When you’re on the hunt for a pre-owned vehicle, it’s easy to automatically assume that the lower the mileage, the better the car. But, is that always true? The age-old advice that many would give is that you need to stay away from pre-owned cars with over 100,000 miles. However, this isn’t always the case. A pre-owned vehicle with over 100,000 miles could still be a good buy for your OH commute if it has been properly maintained and well taken care of. Today at Celebration Kia, we’re going to help you go over good mileage for a used car and other things to consider before purchasing your next OHdaily drive.

Other Things to Consider When Purchasing a Pre-Owned Car

While sometimes good mileage for a used car can be an important factor when making your decision, there are also other things you need to consider. Along with mileage, here’s what else you need to take a look at when purchasing a pre-owned vehicle:

  • Driving Habits: 100,000 miles in stop-and-go traffic puts more stress on a vehicle than if it had 100,000 miles from highway driving. So, before you ask yourself, “What is good mileage on a used car,” also make sure to ask about the vehicle’s driving history.
  • Climate: Much like driving history, a vehicle that has spent most of its life in a dry, warm climate, has less stress on its components than one that was in a cold, wet climate. So, it’s important to know where the vehicle is coming from as well.
  • Inspection: One of the most important things you can do is take your potential vehicle to a certified mechanic for an inspection. This will help you determine if there are any issues you might have to get addressed if you decide to purchase the vehicle.
  • Maintenance: Last but certainly not least is maintenance history. You want to ensure that the vehicle has had regular maintenance items performed. Regular maintenance can indicate that the previous owner took good care of the vehicle, meaning it’s less likely you’ll have to deal with expensive repairs due to neglect.

What’s Better – Miles or Age?

Truthfully, to answer the question, “What is good mileage on a used car,” there are a lot of factors that can make a pre-owned car a good buy. While low mileage can be a good indicator, the better way to look at buying a pre-owned car is how much mileage you can expect to get out of it. One with 50,000 miles that’s working well and has good maintenance history is a no-brainer. A vehicle with 100,000 miles that also has good maintenance history could also be just as good, as long as you keep in mind that it’ll likely last you another four years or so.

Most OH drivers put about 12,000 miles a year on their car so take that into consideration as well. Other things to look out for on top of good mileage for a used car vs. the age of a used car are as follows:

  • Sometimes, low miles on an older car isn’t always best. An older car with low miles usually means it hasn’t regularly been driven. Because of this, over time, rubber seals and gaskets can develop issues. This can lead to major issues down the road.
  • High miles with well-documented maintenance history is typically a smarter buy than a car with lower miles but has been neglected.
  • If you’re looking to stay within a tight budget, low mileage vehicles usually have a higher price tag.
